What We Do
The Melissa Nathan Foundation
Supporting Families in Crisis
Melissa Nathan died of breast cancer in 2006 aged 37, leaving her devoted husband and their beloved three-year old son. A year later, the Melissa Nathan Foundation was set up in her name and memory, dedicated to Supporting Families in Crisis.
Melissa frequently did this herself, without mentioning it to anyone. Stories of her generosity and kindness to families suffering financial hardship and other crisis situations only emerged after her death.
The Melissa Nathan Foundation enables us to honour and continue her extraordinary kindness and warmth.
Melissa was a remarkable person. Modest and compassionate, but with a wicked wit and occasionally caustic sense of humour, she was a wildly funny woman loved by all. A talented writer, she achieved a series of internationally best-selling books, producing joyful and spirit-lifting novels even through her darkest days.
She worked assiduously for the Samaritans, comforting and counselling her friends in her home while also looking after her adored baby. Friends, family and her fan-base have said her death left a huge hole in their lives.
Quietly, she looked after others in financial need whenever she could; a genuine altruism wanting no thanks other than the satisfaction of helping a little.
The Melissa Nathan Foundation has already granted donations to families struggling desperately to cope with the challenges facing their disabled, sick or dying children and young adults, including The Willow Foundation, Honeypot, and the Bone Cancer Research Trust.
A Variety Club Sunshine Bus in the livery of the Foundation has been donated to provide transport for the young people at the Manor School in London.
Plans are now well under way to present a second coach in early 2012 to another school or college with disabled or disadvantaged youngsters.
Sadly there'll always be families in crisis, and we intend to continue offering them help in Melissa's name and memory.
With your support, however small, we can enable YOU to help them as well. Each and every effort to raise funds or make donations would be very welcome indeed.
We'd be pleased to hear your own fundraising proposals and plans, and we'll happily support and promote your project. There are so many ways: sponsored runs, balloon flights, coffee mornings and cake sales, group theatre outings, supper quizzes, and many more innovative ideas.
And we'd really welcome a donation towards our Sunshine Bus fund!
We know that Melissa would appreciate your help.
